Passive Dosing of Petroleum and Essential Oil UVCBs—Whole Mixture Toxicity Testing at Controlled Exposure

Petroleum products and essential oils are produced used in large amounts categorized as Substances of Unknown or Variable composition, Complex reaction Biological materials (UVCBs). These UVCBs notorious difficult-to-test substances, since they complex mixtures hydrophobic volatile compounds. This study introduces two passive dosing (PD) approaches for whole UVCB toxicity testing: (1) headspace PD applies the purified lipid oil a donor to control exposure via (2) silicone rod UVCB-loaded rods an aqueous test medium headspace. Headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry measurements were cross-validate at saturation level confirm maintain mixture composition varying concentration levels. Both applied whole-mixture tests petroleum with daphnia algae. Finally, observed was linked concentrations membranes equilibrium donors. Dose-response curves similar across tested species but differed by order magnitude between systems. All toxic effects consistent baseline toxicity, no excess observed.
